National Seniors Day

National Seniors Day was celebrated on October 1, 2020. I am not sure ‘celebrated’ is the right word. Most of us don’t feel like celebrating these days and should we be so inclined- we are significantly restricted. My wonderful client turned 101 in September and the only celebrants was the client, her caregiver, Ziggy and myself. Certainly quite different than last year’s celebration.
We can still ‘celebrate’ in small and meaningful ways. We can reach out (and stay 6 feet apart), say thank you and offer our assistance. Sometimes a friendly word can make all the difference in someone’s day.
I thought I would share some community resources that are available. The majority are online and to help get seniors on line https://cyberseniors.org/ can help at no charge.
The City is offering a number of resources which I have included:
i Seniors Active Living Centres – Many are providing virtual/phone programs (search “Older adults” or “Seniors”) including Seniors Centres Without Walls; Many SALCs have also opened for in-person programming (contact individual SALCs)
ii The City’s Stay, Play & Learn at Home webpage lists many free virtual and phone call activities for residents including many specifically for seniors (you can search or sort by “senior” or “older adult”). For SALCS with virtual programming
iii City of Toronto Recreation Centres and Older Adult Centres – Re-opened with distancing and screening; You can now reserve your fitness classes or swim lanes online (opening October 5); many locations have in-person drop-in activities (contact the centre directly)
iv Toronto Public Library – Provides regular updates on in-person services available. At the moment (subject to change due to COVID-19), people can do the following in-branch:
o Sign up for a library card; Use Wi-fi
o Reserve a computer, as well as print and photocopy with a copy card account)
o Bookmobile and Home Library Service are also reinstated with limited and contactless service
Hope this helps with the celebration…..
